better は《 good の比較級で「より良い」 》直訳すると「それは、何もないことと比較するといいほうだ」ということです。希望していたことや、期待していたことが満足するものではないけど「それがないよりまし＝何もないよりましだ」という意味です。自分の気持ちを表したり、相手が落ち込んでいるとき慰めるときなどに使える定番のフレーズです。口語では Better than nothing. だけでよく使われています。
